Serbian President Vucic Resigns, Paving Way for Elections and Potential PM Bid

Serbia’s political landscape is set for a significant shift as President Aleksandar Vucic announced his resignation, ending his second five-year term prematurely. This move comes ahead of the country’s snap parliamentary election scheduled for October 25. Vucic’s resignation not only paves the way for an upcoming presidential election, expected to commence by the end of December, but also opens up the possibility for him to pursue the role of prime minister if his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and its allies secure a parliamentary majority.

As per the Serbian constitution, Ana Brnabic, the Speaker of Parliament, will assume the role of interim president until a new president is elected. Vucic’s decision to step down is seen as a strategic maneuver in the face of growing political challenges and opposition, particularly from groups such as the student-led Students Win movement and the European Serbia coalition.

Vucic has been a dominant figure in Serbian politics for over a decade, initially serving as prime minister before his presidency began in 2017. His tenure has been marked by efforts to strengthen Serbia’s economic ties with China and maintain relations with Russia, while also pursuing the long-term goal of joining the European Union. Additionally, Serbia has bolstered its relations with Israel and the United States, as evidenced by the recent opening of a facility for manufacturing Israeli-designed military drones to enhance its defense capabilities.

Despite these international and domestic policy moves, Vucic’s administration has been under pressure due to sustained protests following a tragic incident in November 2024. The collapse of a railway station awning in Novi Sad resulted in 16 fatalities, prompting public outcry and demands for greater accountability, transparency, and measures against corruption. The protests have led to arrests and resignations of several officials, and Vucic responded by announcing pardons and amnesties for numerous protest-related individuals.

The upcoming elections are critical, as they test Vucic’s political influence and the ability of his party to retain power amid public discontent and increasing opposition. The outcome will not only determine the next president but also shape Serbia’s political trajectory and its approach to domestic and international issues.
