Bulgaria Highlights Rising Black Sea Security Risks Amid Ukraine Conflict

Bulgaria is raising alarms over escalating security threats in the Black Sea, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. President Iliana Yotova highlighted the issue following recent drone attacks on commercial vessels within Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, underscoring the precarious state of maritime security in the region.

During an October 7 meeting of the Consultative Council on National Security, Yotova addressed the serious concerns these incidents have sparked regarding the safety of maritime navigation and the protection of critical infrastructure. The attacks, which occurred on October 6, resulted in the sinking of one ship and the loss of its crew, while another vessel was severely damaged but its crew was rescued. Bulgarian authorities have noted the increasing use of sea and air drones as a significant risk to commercial shipping and infrastructure.

In response to these threats, the council has committed to enhancing maritime surveillance, bolstering the protection of strategic sites, and expanding Bulgaria’s capabilities to counter drone threats. They also emphasized the importance of maintaining readiness for maritime search and rescue operations. Plans are underway for Bulgaria to collaborate with NATO and the European Union to strengthen air and maritime surveillance, as well as improve coastal security. Consultations with Romania and Türkiye are also on the agenda to develop measures that safeguard merchant shipping in the Black Sea.

Yotova urged for diplomatic efforts to ensure safer navigation in the Black Sea, encouraging cooperation among the countries bordering the region. She also called for international investigations into the attacks on commercial vessels and advocated for greater involvement from European and international maritime institutions.
