In a significant shift within Europe’s aviation landscape, Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow Airport as the continent’s busiest hub for the month of July. Istanbul Airport recorded handling 8.15 million passengers during this period, surpassing Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This change comes as Heathrow experienced a 1.5% drop in passenger numbers compared to the same month last year, while Istanbul saw a 2.3% increase in traffic.
The decline in passenger numbers at Heathrow has been partly attributed to disruptions related to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This development has intensified calls for the UK government to greenlight Heathrow’s proposed third runway. Currently operating with two runways nearing full capacity, Heathrow’s expansion plan, estimated at £33 billion, aims to boost its annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers, a move seen as vital for enhancing the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism.
Since its inauguration in 2018, Istanbul Airport has benefited from its larger site and 24-hour operations. It currently boasts three runways, with a fourth set to be operational by the end of 2026. This infrastructure advantage has played a crucial role in accommodating more passengers and maintaining its competitive edge over other major European airports.
While Heathrow faces challenges, other UK airports have witnessed record-breaking figures. London Stansted and Manchester airports both celebrated their busiest July yet, with Stansted handling 3.1 million passengers and Manchester welcoming 3.4 million. These numbers highlight the varying dynamics within the UK’s aviation sector amidst ongoing debates about capacity and expansion.
