EU Backs €170 Million Aid for Bulgarian Farmers Facing Rising Costs

The European Commission has announced the approval of a €170 million state aid package aimed at supporting Bulgarian farmers grappling with increased fuel and fertiliser costs, exacerbated by the ongoing Middle East crisis. This funding will be dispensed through direct grants to agricultural producers, providing much-needed relief from the rising input costs that threaten their operations.

Under the terms of this aid package, individual farming companies in Bulgaria can receive up to €50,000. The grants are designed to alleviate some of the financial pressures faced by farmers and must be distributed by December 31, 2026. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the European Commission to mitigate the economic impacts of global crises on European agriculture.

This aid follows a previous package approved in 2024, which allocated approximately €169 million to support Bulgarian farmers affected by soaring energy costs and the economic repercussions of the war in Ukraine. These consecutive support measures underscore the ongoing challenges faced by the agricultural sector in Bulgaria due to external geopolitical factors.

The European Commission’s decision reflects a continued commitment to sustaining the agricultural industry across the EU, particularly in member states like Bulgaria where farmers have been hit hard by rising operational costs. The aid is expected to help stabilize production and maintain the competitiveness of Bulgarian agriculture in the face of international market fluctuations.
