Bulgaria Engages Russia Over Black Sea Drone Attacks on Merchant Ships

Following a series of drone attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea, Bulgaria’s maritime security is under scrutiny. Bulgarian Prime Minister Roumen Radev engaged in talks with the Russian Ambassador to Bulgaria, Eleonora Mitrofanova, on October 13, amid rising tensions and concerns over regional conflict and the security of commercial shipping routes.

Although Bulgaria lacks definitive evidence pinpointing the origin of the drones, Radev expressed skepticism regarding Ukraine’s involvement, suggesting the attacks seemed to benefit Russia more. In response, Ambassador Mitrofanova reported having no information from Russia’s Defense Ministry and posited the possibility of a third party being responsible for the incidents.

The attacks have had immediate repercussions for commercial shipping in the region, as insurance costs have surged and some operators have become hesitant to send cargo to Bulgarian ports. This disruption has notably impacted oil supplies to the Burgas refinery, increasing costs and security concerns. Bulgaria is now exploring potential collaborative efforts with Romania and Türkiye to enhance maritime safety in the Black Sea.

Bulgarian President Iliana Yotova also condemned the drone attacks, emphasizing the threat they pose to navigation freedom and supply-chain stability. She called for a thorough investigation, diplomatic engagement to defuse tensions, and adherence to recommendations from an earlier meeting of Bulgaria’s Consultative Council on National Security.

As Bulgaria navigates these challenges, it remains committed to conducting a comprehensive investigation in partnership with its European Union and NATO allies to determine the facts surrounding these attacks.
