The European Union has pledged significant financial support to Azerbaijan, as announced by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during her visit to Baku. The EU plans to allocate up to €200 million in grants to boost Azerbaijan’s transport, energy, and digital infrastructure projects. This financial injection is anticipated to stimulate around €2 billion in both public and private investments.
During her meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, von der Leyen focused on enhancing energy cooperation and regional connectivity between the EU and Azerbaijan. The discussions also covered the ongoing peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan. As part of her proposals, von der Leyen suggested a new connectivity partnership between the EU and Azerbaijan, aiming to fortify ties and collaboration.
President Aliyev noted a significant increase in Azerbaijani gas exports to EU member states, reporting a rise of approximately 65% since the 2022 energy agreement with the EU. This development sees ten EU countries now importing gas from Azerbaijan, highlighting the growing energy link between the regions.
In addition to infrastructure investments, von der Leyen announced a €20 million support initiative targeted at border communities. This program is set to improve healthcare services, facilitate mine clearance, promote rural development, and support small businesses in these areas. This initiative underscores the EU’s commitment to fostering stability and development in the region.
Following her engagements in Azerbaijan, the European Commission president is expected to continue her diplomatic efforts in the South Caucasus with scheduled talks in Armenia, further emphasizing the EU’s strategic interest in enhancing regional partnerships and fostering peace and prosperity.
