With the busy summer travel season underway, airlines and airports have requested that the European Union temporarily halt its new biometric border check system. They express concern that long wait times and delays are affecting travel plans. According to industry groups, passengers have encountered waits of up to five hours at border controls, leading to some flights taking off with empty seats as travelers remain stuck in queues. In certain instances, airlines have chosen to delay flights to allow additional passengers time to complete the biometric checks.
The EU’s biometric system, which has been gradually introduced since October, mandates that non-EU travelers submit fingerprints and facial images upon entering the region. However, the rollout has presented operational difficulties for airports and border authorities. In response, representatives from the airline and airport sectors are appealing to the European Commission for a temporary suspension of these checks during July and August when passenger volumes surpass the capacity of border control.
Various countries within the EU have already faced challenges with the system’s implementation, prompting some locations to reduce or pause biometric checks to avoid significant disruptions during this peak travel period. The travel industry groups warn that ongoing delays could harm Europe’s tourism sector and tarnish its international travel reputation, especially as airports brace for a surge in passengers over the summer months.
To ensure the biometric checks can function efficiently without causing significant disruptions, the groups emphasize the need for more staffing, enhanced technology, and dependable automated systems. They argue that these improvements are crucial for the smooth operation of the biometric system, ensuring it does not impede the travel experience during one of the busiest times of the year.
